Abstract

Abstract Conventional analysis of tool passage through buckled tubing is based on planar curvature assumptions. However, helical buckling involves three-dimensional geometry which can be further complicated by wellbore curvature. This paper is an analysis of tool clearances within tubing, including the effects of tool orientation, helical buckling and wellbore curvature. The maximum free passage tool length for combined buckling and wellbore curvature is determined. Alternately, the minimum pull-through force for a given tool length is determined.
