Abstract

The last decade has brought two important reforms: (1) A certification of psychotherapists which has much reduced the charlatanry in the field, and (2) a mandatory orientation course in psychotherapy for all psychiatric residents which has led to a scientific and nuanced view amongst Swedish psychiatrists on this part of medicine. In a postal inquiry, all respondents wanted this course to be continued. Some details of the outline are given. There has been severe problems, however, due to the general economic recession, which has hit particularly those patients who are in need of psychotherapy. In spite of a great interest and fair knowledge in psychotherapy amongst Swedish psychiatrists, structural problems make it almost impossible to make use of this.Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Specialist Training, Sweden.
