Abstract

SUMMARY.The evolution of courses in analytic and dynamic psychotherapy is discussed. A brief historical sketch of the Rugby Psychotherapy Conferences is included as a background. Three types of training are identified: independent analytic trainings, regional diploma courses and senior registrar trainings. Different levels of psychotherapy are emphasised and the idea of a three‐stage training: primary degree, core professional qualification and postgraduate specialist training. The position of the core professions and their relevance and significance are discussed in relation to the possible development of a new profession of adult non‐medical psychotherapists.
