Abstract

This article presents an in-depth reflection on the 2024 Olympic Games experience, through the eyes of the Core Canadian medical team. Accompanying a national team to the Olympic Games represents a unique and demanding experience for any sports medicine healthcare professional. Focusing on the challenges of preparation, both personal and professional, it illustrates the complexities involved in organizing and managing healthcare for high-level athletes. It covers the key stages of the application process, pre-Games preparation and the dynamics of working on site. Emphasis is placed on the importance of communication, stress management, mental and physical preparation, and the organization of a multidisciplinary medical team to ensure athletes' safety and well-being. Physicians must not only be technically competent, but also be mentally and physically prepared for a demanding work environment. This article aims to share these experiences to better prepare future professionals aspiring to this prestigious role. Aspiring physicians should be actively involved in sport, keep their knowledge up to date, and adopt an athlete-centred approach.
