Abstract

Continuing change in the socio-economic environment of education systems focusses increasing pressure upon the systems and their institutions to become more adaptive. The present paper describes a research project in higher education which embodies some of the mechanisms necessary for an institution's adaptive responses. The project, SEEB (Social Economic and Educational Background) is primarily concerned with the development of a data base related to the characteristics and attitudes of first year undergraduates at Plymouth Polytechnic, but embodies the potential for the development of a management information system that can be used to underpin institutional planning and provide a stimulus for research into particular problems or areas of interest.
