Abstract

Obesity should be understood as a chronic disease that involves multiple organs. As a disease that is largely multifactorial, its causes must be studied and all complications arising from it must also be taken into account. First, a diagnosis should be made based on the medical record, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. This should then be followed by more precise diagnostics by specialists. New classifications, such as ABCD, should be considered and different scales should be used to predict associated risks. Objectives for control should be realistic and agreed upon with patients and therapies must be individualized. The pillars of treatment should be diet and exercise. Drug treatment or invasive techniques may be used in select patients, always taking into account the contraindications and associated side effects.
