Abstract

This paper is a historical and culturalapproach in which we use the concept of «confessionalization» to understand what we call proto-nationalism in Europe. It is a complex cultural and political process. It began with the arrival of the Protestant Reformation (at the beginning of the 16th century), resulting in a break from the unitary Church, with the consequent change in Western culture, expressed in confessional particularisms that would eventually lead to a variety of political entities. After overcoming the confessional stage, these entities ended in the secularization of culture.
