Abstract

Every oil tanker that plies the world shipping lanes today—and their number has increased enormously in the past ten years—carries more than petroleum in its various forms. Each one also bears a burden of maintenance costs which, for a 12,000‐ton vessel, commonly amounts to as much as £250,000 over a 12‐year operating period. Corrosion is almost solely responsible for this high maintenance bill. The problem is always there, though its seriousness naturally depends upon the cargoes carried and conditions of service. It is a growing problem as the world's tanker fleets, which now account for more than a quarter of the total merchant shipping tonnage, also grow in size.
