Abstract

1. The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea by Oil (1954) and its amendments (1962) are discussed. 2. An account is given of the load-on-top procedure, which is designed to prevent oil pollution of the sea by tankers and which is currently practised by about three-quarters of the world's tanker fleet. 3. The grounding of the “Torrey Canyon” has highlighted some of the problems which can arise following tanker accidents and has prompted consideration of how accidents might be minimised. Some possible accident and pollution prevention measures are discussed briefly and a few pointers are given to areas in which future development is desirable.
