Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between speed reduction and spot rates at which the owner breaks even. Thus, at a World Scale below the break-even point the owner could slow down to the indicated speed, make up his lost capacity by voyage chartering, and save money in the bargain. It is generally believed that the larger part of the world's tanker fleet is now sailing at reduced speed.
