Abstract

Simulations CFD-ABAQUS based erosion prediction for elbow bend with R/D =1.5were performed using a comprehensive procedure included flow simulation, particle tracking and erosion calculation. Three different erosion-corrosion positions of high pressure are localized in the intrados under opening bend with internal pressure. The estimation of erosion-corrosion region with high pressure is simulation as semi-elliptical crack. The CFD-ABAQUS and visual observations with areal situation in desalination plant were compared with available literature results showing reasonably good agreements. Increasing in the radius and curvature of elbow pipe and different bonding of composite are proposed to reduce the bend moment in the corrosion position to replace/repair the original elbow. The results presented in this paper will shed some light on the importance of location of maximum erosion and to propose engineering solutions to repair/ replace in the bend pipe geometry.
