Abstract

The chapter describes main properties and control methods of the doubly fed induction machine, which is currently one of the main technologies in the wind energy conversion systems. First part of the chapter is devoted to mathematical description in the steady state model and the machine operating regions, and the dynamic model, which is used for synthesis of the control methods. The control methods, described in section 2, are related to both, grid connected and standalone operation mode. The described stator flux oriented control for grid connection operation includes the issue of operation with unbalanced grid voltage. The described stator voltage control method for standalone operation includes the issues of unbalanced and nonlinear load. Moreover, the rotor position estimation in sensorless control methods are discussed. The last part presents the properties of wind turbine equipped with doubly fed induction machine with short description of wind turbine aerodynamics, wind turbine superior control, steady state performance of wind turbine and its behavior under the voltage dips.
