Abstract

For the case of unbalanced grid voltages, active power of pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier is reduced due to the current limitation of power switches. Under unbalanced grid voltages, two existing control methods for the PWM rectifier are widely adopted, one for instantaneous active power control, and the other for balanced positive sequence current control. To maximize the PWM rectifier instantaneous active power capability and minimize active power oscillations during voltage dips, a control method combining balanced positive sequence and instantaneous active power control is proposed. The limitations of these two control methods are given, and the fluctuations on active and reactive power using the proposed control method are discussed in detail in this paper. The analysis in this paper is based on p.u. system, and some conclusions are drawn. Corroboration of the expected features of the proposed control method is carried out by means of experiments.
