Abstract
A prototype magnetic positron beam was built in order to study the feasibility of using low energy(≈ 1–2 MeV) deuteron accelerators to produce moderate-intensity (≈ 10 7–10 8 e +/s) monoenergetic low energy positron beams. Graphite and diamond targets were bombarded with a few μA of deuterons at energies of 0.9, 1.3 and 1.8 MeV to produce the short lived 13N β + emitter. The results show that the peak β + activity per 1 μA of deuteron irradiation is about 1 mCi. When combined with a standard positron moderator, this method of producing low energy positrons is expected to be capable of yielding a beam of up to 10 8 e +/s.
