Abstract
Renewable energy source with the greatest potential for exploitation in Vojvodina Province is biomass. Agricultural biomass produced annualy in Vojvodina is 9 million tonnnes, one third of which is available for energy production and amounts to 3 million tonnes per year, which represents energy potential of 40.000 TJ/year. Energy potential of wheat straw is cca 5.300 TJ per year, equal to 130 thousand tonnes od extra light heating oil. Eventhough biomass combustion is an ancient technology, used since the dawn of humanity, agricultural biomass waste utilisation is still relatively new. Direct combustion of wheat straw shows great potential for heat generation in Vojvodina. This paper analysed the subjects of wheat straw combustion, requirements needed for optimal proccess performance, while focusing on the influence of combustion quality on the formation and emission of the pollutants in the atmosphere. Furthermore, data from energy efficiency and pollutant emission measurements for couple of small scale facilities are also presented.
