Prior to adrenal corticotherapy, conventional medical management, although helpful in the majority of the patients, seldom produced dramatic results. In a series1of 100 cases reported in 1948, 53 patients were estimated to have benefited from medical therapy. Fourteen patients died; the most common cause of death (nine patients) was peritonitis secondary to perforation of the bowel. In a recent survey2of 180 cases treated with ACTH, cortisone, hydrocortisone and related compounds in the years 1950 through 1955, a satisfactory, often very...Bibliography1.
