Abstract

The use of hospital beds in psychiatric wards by problem drinkers is illustrated by means of two out-patient cohorts from 1972 and 1982. Sex differences are seen concerning hospitalization, diagnosis, and discharge. Over a 10-year period it is possible that greater acceptance of abuse of alcohol as a disease or condition demanding treatment has developed. It is suggested that there is a need for greater co-operation between the out-patient and the in-patient sectors and the establishment of special units for problem drinkers.
