Abstract
The paper analyzes risk mapping applied in developed countries, with a special focus on the latest risk mapping guidelines proposed by the European Union, as presented in the Handbook for the Methodology and Implementation of Road Safety. The aim of the present Handbook is to provide necessary guidelines for applying the methodology to road networks. Its application provides a cost-effective assessment of the safety of the road network. The methodology comprises two approaches: one for the assessment of roads on the basis of crash occurrence analysis (reactive methodology) and one for the assessment of the in-built safety of roads (proactive methodology). The two methodologies are both applied over the same network and the resulting assessment outcomes are combined via an integration methodology to provide the final road network rating and ranking. The handbook provides detailed instructions on the application of the above three approaches. After a detailed analysis, its practical application was carried out on the IA state road - the A1 motorway. As an output of the methodology, sections of very high priority were obtained, which can later serve as relevant data and indicate the future direction in the management of the road network.
