Abstract

Porto, Portugal, is the venue for the tenth European Union Young Scientists contest, which takes place on 21-26 September 1998. This annual competition is organized by the European Community's Training and Mobility of Researchers programmme, with the venue and additional sponsorship provided by the host nation. It brings together the winners of national contests in 30 countries, and comprises a three-day science fair for the contestants to exhibit their projects, followed by a prize-giving day. There are three first prizes of ECU 5000, three second prizes of ECU 3000 and six third prizes of ECU 1500. In addition there are honorary awards to enable one winner to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, one to attend the Science Festival in London, and up to three teams to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair in the USA. Objectives of the contest include: identifying and encouraging strong scientific talent; providing a stimulus for the development of the most promising young scientists in Europe; and promoting a spirit of innovation and interchange between young scientists. The judges will be seeking originality and creativity in the approach to problems, skill and care in the research, continuity from conception to conclusion, clarity in the interpretation of results and quality in the presentation and discussion.
