Abstract

Shock compression experiments for GaAs are performed up to about 400 kbar. Hugoniot data are obtained both by the argon flash gap technique and by the inclined mirror technique. Inclined mirror experiments reveal the three-wave structure, yielding the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) and apparent phase transition pressure to be 84±8 kbar and 203±11 kbar, respectively. A correction to remove the effect of HEL on the phase transition pressure reduce the latter value to 162±11 kbar, which corresponds to the static phase transition pressure. Preliminary argon flash gap experiments for GaP show the phase transition at about 260 kbar.
