Abstract

With the Health Policy Conference held in February this year, attendees were prepared for any health policy issues introduced this month and those expected to be introduced in the coming year. March is always a good month to talk about policy and politics since the Ides of March is infamous in political history. It was in March when Julius Caesar was warned to beware. It is said he paid no mind to the warning. He even joked about it while continuing to meet with the Senate where he was ultimately stabbed to death. Approximately 60 conspirators were involved including Brutus -- known as the most famous of the conspirators. Just as it was back in 44 BC, attention and preparation continues to be the keys to success in policy and politics. The point is, being well prepared ahead of time is essential when dealing with issues that involve policy. At this year’s Health Policy Conference, the participants learned or improved their knowledge and skills related to health care fraud, policies impacting transgender care, and the impact of the opioid epidemic on palliative care. Topics highlighted included an update on MACRA, rural health and telehealth. Charlie Cook Jr., known for his independent and non-partisan views, provided an update on the current political climate. Mary Wakefield’s Fireside Chat was on the importance of NPs in primary care. The attendees were prepped and ready to hit Capitol Hill with the AANP messages. This event was important preparation for us to advocate for the high quality, cost-effective care provided by NPs. As a profession, NPs need to prepare for the Ides of March, and all the other “stabbings” we endure in order to effectively care for our patients. If you did not attend the 2019 Health Policy Conference, I hope you will mark your calendar and make plans to attend next year. Also, on tap for 2019 and a first of its kind conference experience for our association: the AANP Live: 2019 Diabetes Virtual Conference, March 23. I hope you will attend!
