Abstract
Determining essential care items in a prenatal appointment efficiently and accurately has become more challenging because prenatal care has become increasingly complex over the last 100 years. When providing prenatal care, it is helpful to understand its background, origin, slow evolution, and need for further research on best practices. This short historical review and presentation of a newly developed prenatal checklist tool can help prenatal care providers be thorough, efficient, and consistent in their practice. This will especially benefit students and clinicians who are new graduates or those for whom obstetrics is not their primary specialty.
