Abstract

The growth mechanism of YBCO films on Ag substrates, and the preparation conditions that yield high Jc values, have been investigated. Although good in-plane aligned YBCD films could be grown on the (110) textured Ag tape, films on the (100) surface of a single crystal had weak in-plane alignment. This demonstrates that in-plane alignment of YBCO film is not determined only by lattice matching with the Ag but also by other factors. It was supposed that vaporization of Ag atoms from the surface also affected film growth. By using a Cu-rich target to correct the diffusion of deposited Cu atoms into the Ag substrate during early stage of deposition, superconducting tape with good in-plane alignment and high Jc (1.2 X l05A/cm2) was obtained.
