Abstract

We have been successful in synthesizing a new layered cuprate, Gd2CaBa2Ti2Cu2O12 and in isolating single phase of this compound. The crystal structure was investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and the Rietveld analysis. It has a tetragonal symmetry with the lattice parameters: a=3.894A and c=35.49A. There are sheets consisting of CuO5 pyramids in the crystal, which is one of the common features of p-type high-Tc superconducting cuprates. The effects of Ca substitution for Gd are investigated. The electrical resistivity of the substituted samples showed lower value than the non-substituted sample, but any indication of superconductivity was not detected above 4.2K for all samples.
