Abstract

To the Editor: In their excellent article, Warkany et al. (Amer. J. Dis. Child.102:249-279 (Aug.) 1961) rightly call attention to the need for a better understanding of conditions leading to the birth at term of infants with low birth weights, incorrectly classified as prematures. As the authors have referred to the definition of prematurity recommended by the World Health Organization 1950 (World Health Organization Technical Report Series, 1950, No. 27), it may be of interest to your readers to know that an Expert Committee of the World Health Organization, under the chairmanship of Dr. Leona Baumgartner, has recently reexamined that definition and reviewed the entire question of low birth weight.
