Abstract

The author discuss four patients who were pregnant during their analyses and wanted to abort treatment. Each patient struggled with both conscious and unconscious fantasies of a destructive mother/analyst that could interfere with their well-being with envious retaliation and/or damage to the baby. The origins of these fantasies were unresolved preoedipal and oedipal conflicts and the patients' own destructive wishes. These issues were worked through with various degrees of success, dependent on the persistence of a delusional transference.
