Abstract

Case formulation is a crucial component in the process of working with a client in psychotherapy. The client presented in the current work was troubled mainly by her fear of contamination and persisting difficulties in romantic relationships. Using psychodynamic conceptualisation, the formation of her symptoms can be explained by taking a close examination of her defence mechanisms, object relations, and oedipal conflict that have been repressed in her unconscious and revealed through her dreams. Clients who have not had their oedipal conflict properly addressed are likely to be fixated at the oedipal stage and to continue carrying these unspoken yet intricate feelings into their love life and marriage, which may cause continuing inner disturbance, mental symptoms, and difficulties in personal life. Moreover, in modern times, Chinese traditional cultural beliefs in gender roles and family dynamics still play a significant role in a woman's identity formation, which, if not properly addressed, is likely to impede her readiness to enter into romantic relationships.
