Abstract
The International Conference of Sustainable Earth Resources Engineering 2020 (SERIES2020) was held virtually on June 19, 2020, via the Facebook platform. The conference was initially planned to be held on April 6-7, 2020, at the Everly Putrajaya Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all over the world, the conference secretariat had to make a few adjustments based on the in-situ COVID-19 progression. After being postponed for a number of times, the secretariat finally left with two choices: a cancellation or a virtual conference. The amount of work done solely pointing to virtual conference with a few months worth of postponement time thrown in. The SERIES2020 organizer is based at Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Malaysia, while the participants came from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China and Oman. At that time, all the countries listed were under travel restriction.SERIES2020 has attracted 73 participants from all over Asia with the conference theme of “Exploring Future Sustainable Engineering Technologies”. The theme was selected based on society’s needs for new and improved technologies related to sustainable resources for various applications while at the same time, reducing environmental problems. SERIES2020 was a perfect platform for researchers and students to virtually meet, discuss, collaborate and build a research network, notwithstanding the global COVID-19 pandemic. The main scope of SERIES2020 included but not limited to: water resources, environmental engineering, mineral processing, structure and materials, construction, and geotechnical engineering. SERIES2020 was conducted through Facebook setting with 20 minutes presentation time allocation and 5 minutes for Q&A session. Participants also allowed to further discuss the presentation in the comment section or via email. The highlight of the event was the plenary session given by Professor Ir. Dr Hubert Savenije from the Delft University Of Technology, the Netherlands on “Maximum power of saline and fresh water mixing in estuaries.” At the end of the conference, the award ceremony was held with a closing speech by the SERIES2020’ advisor, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Yusri Mohd Yunus.Throughout the conference, all the participants had fruitful discussions and exchanges which had contributed to the conference’s success. This proceeding contains twenty-five selected papers, which had been presented and discussed during the SERIES2020. These papers have been accepted for publishing in this proceeding after going through the peer-review process. We are delighted to bring out this SERIES2020 proceeding and dedicate it to all those who have done their best to contribute to this publication.
