Abstract

The current study is concerned with theanalytic pragmatic level of swearing in Arabic withreference to English .It tests the behavior of oath inboth languages. The analysis of swearing aligns withthe speech act theory developed firstly by Austin(1962) and developed later by Searle (1975). Givingoath is about giving a promise or a commitment bywhich the speaker obliges to a future action. Theperformative act of swearing in both English andArabic is illocutionary with maintaining thelocutionary and the perlocutionary acts. The studyalso proves that the felicity condition is satisfiedthrough having a happy utterance in terms ofswearing. In addition, as long as the cooperativeprinciple is met, the Gricean maxims are wellestablishedthroughout this study.
