Abstract

The author regards pragmatism as the mental basis of American national character. The key concept of pragmatism is the Truth presented in its peculiar shape reflecting the essence of worldview and world perception of American nation. The main thesis of pragmatism is the statement: «The Truth is that I believe in». The author states that not only the ordinary American citizens but also the USA political elite are ruled by this principle, while the communication style bears the pragmatic character. The author’s content analysis of the foreign and local periodicals confirms the disagreements between the USA authorities and other representatives of international community who often misrepresent the actions of American political establishment. Using hermeneutic method in the analysis of scientific and fine literature the author has come to the following conclusion, that American pragmatism is based on the faith reflecting the mental views mainly occurring unconsciously. Conversely, turn pragmatic attitudes determine the Americans’ behavior that explains their aspiration for success as the primary goal and explicates the conducted external policy activities where pragmatism also occurs as the basis of communication patterns of political elite.
