Abstract

The longitudinal polarization of electrons or muons scattered elastically on unpolarized deuterons provides a method of detecting possiblep-state admixture in the deuteron wave function and consequently of the |ΔI|=0 weak nuclear force. An explicit calculation taking into account thes, p andd states shows that the percentage helicity not only depends on the extent ofp-state admixture but also in a sensitive way on the relative phases between thes, p andd states.
