Abstract
We describe in detail a 10 cm × 10 cm gas counter which is able to provide two dimensional localization with an accuracy of 1 mm and 500 ps timing resolution for 5.5 MeV α particles. The technology of this detector is intermediate between parallel plate and multiwire proportional counters. It is operated under a pressure of a few Torr of isobutane. It consists of a common cathode (1.5 μm mylar foil with gold evaporated on both sides) located between two parallel planes or orthogonal wires acting as anodes. The entire detector is enclosed in a container with two 1.5 μm mylar foil windows.
