Abstract

Homo- and copolynucleotides containing 2,6-bis(methylthio)purine 9-ribonucleoside (ms 2,6 2Pu) were synthesized by polynucleotide phosphorylase. Poly(ms 2,6 2Pu) has a well stacked structure in the neutral solution as studied by CD spectra. The polymer is digestible with ribonuclease M and shows hyperchromicities as high as 42.2 and 83 % at 260 and 300 nm, respectively. A copolymer, poly(ms 2,6 2PuG), formed a double helical complex with poly(C) without forming loops.
