Abstract

SUMMARYThe chromosome set of the fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) has been studied in cell cultures of kidney and testis and in smears of bone marrow and germinal cells. 34 chromosomes, plus a variable number of supernumerary microchromosomes (from 0 to 4) were found in all individuals. The microchromosome number varies not only from individual to individual but also within the same individual. The discrepancy with previous results is underlined and the possible origin of the variability is discussed.
