Abstract

AbstractAniline hydrochloride was polymerized in water and in 1 M hydrochloric acid by oxidation with ammonium persulfate. The macroscopic precipitation of polyaniline was prevented by the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol). The change of pH occurring during the reaction were recorded. Their relation to color transitions is discussed. The reaction was accelerated by introduction of seed polyaniline particles. The properties of resulting dispersions were not affected by seeding. The particle diameter was about 310 nm for polymerization in water and about 420 nm in 1 M hydrochloric acid.
