Abstract

The influence of an electric field on the yellow series of oriented single crystals of Cu 2O has been studied in polarized light at 4.2°K using a modulation technique. In the electric field, weak fine structure lines appear in the excitonic spectra. These lines are strongly polarized in single crystals. The dependence of their polarization on the directions of the field and of the polarization of light, allows a determination of the nature of the transitions involved (electric quadrupole or magnetic dipole lines).
