Abstract
Dairi Regency is one of the leading coffee producers in North Sumatra. Most of the coffee farmers in Dairi Regency are engaged in contract farming (CF) with the company PT. Wahana Graha Makmur (WGM). However, the implementation of CF could have been better. This research aims to analyze the mechanisms of established CF patterns and to find out how partner farmers perceive CF in Dairi Region. The survey was conducted from June to December 2023 in Sumbul, Parbuluan and Sitinjo Districts. Respondents were 90 partners of the Cimata Makmur cooperative and 70 partners of the MPOK Catholic Church. CF patterns were analyzed using descriptive analysis, and farmer perceptions were analyzed using a Likert scale. Seven indicators were used in perception analysis: relative advantage, suitability, complexity, communication, cooperation, trust and commitment. The Mann-Whitney test was also conducted to determine differences in the perceptions of partner farmers. The results show that the CF pattern between cooperative partner farmers is a multiparty model, and the partnership pattern between church partner farmers is an intermediate model. Research also shows differences in perceptions between cooperative partner farmers and church partners. These findings provide useful information for companies as a basis for improving partnerships. Farmers' perceptions can be improved with good communication management to reduce the lack of information among partner farmers.
