Abstract

An analytical approach to the planning of regional air transportation networks resulted in the formulation of a formal mathematical programming model which was applied to a case study of the Appalachian Region. The specific problem (air transport system in Appalachia) has two givens to be used as inputs to the model: the cities to be served and the demands to be met. The model was originally formulated as an integer programming model, but was modified slightly to coincide with the framework of linear programming, which provided for both efficient solutions and the simultaneous generation of information of considerable value to transportation planners and decision makers. /ASCE/
