Abstract

To estimate the burden of disease in terms of Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALYS) and to measure the costs associated with the loss of productivity due to premature mortality of Urinary tract infection (UTI) and healthcare-associated pneumonia, including ventilator-associated pneumonia, (HAP/VAP) in Argentina during 2016. The healthcare-associated infections included were UTI and HAP. We measured the burden of disease in DALYS, as the sum of Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to premature mortality in the population and Years Lost due to Disability (YLD). We used the Burden of Communicable Disease in Europe toolkit to model the natural history disease progression pathway of UTI and HAP. We used local population, incidence and mortality data from Census, hospital records and the literature. The economic burden of disease was assessed using the Human Capital approach to estimate the costs associated to loss of productivity due to premature death. We estimated a total number of 12,272 cases of HAP/VAP and 54,188 of UTI a year in Argentina. The total burden of disease amounted to 132,261 DALYs, of which 107,815 correspond to HAP/VAP and 24,446 to UTI. The total economic burden due to premature death was $190 million US dollars. The YLL were 100,625 for HAP/VAP and 7,849 for UTI. HAI are a major public health problem globally. Our results show the high burden of HAP/VAP and UTI in Argentina. If we compare our results with the estimation from the Global Burden of Disease, the total DALYs/100.000 of HAP/VAP and UTI together would rank among the five most serious communicable diseases in Argentina in 2016. This poses a strong need of prevention and control for HAI.
