Abstract

The research characterizes the relevance of citizenship education in Latvia and highlights the importance of citizenship education in the policy-making process. The article contains three thematic sections. The first section explains the content and results of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) in Latvia. The second section presents the content analysis of Latvia’s educational policy with the aim to search for the place and significance of the ICCS and civic education. The third section shows the importance of formal and informal citizenship education and highlights the place of citizenship education in the new curriculum. In addition, the results show the importance of Latvian citizens’ initiative and the activity of NGOs in the activation of civic capacity. In conclusion, there are suggestions provided on how to perfect the citizenship education and the policy-making process.
