Abstract

Research conducted in Europe and the world shows that the attitude towards marriage as a socially significant institution is changing in society, and young people in Europe often consider it an outdated institution, thus the attitude towards marriage is deteriorating, while the attitude towards divorce is improving as it is no longer condemned. Marriage should be understood as a socially and legally recognized economic and sexual union of a woman and a man, which determines the legal status of the mother and father of children born in marriage, as well as creates a socially significant bond not only between the spouses themselves, but also between the members of their families. In Latvia, during the last 10 years, on average 5-6 marriages per 1000 inhabitants are concluded, but around 40 % of marriages are divorced. Research shows that children who are raised in full families (preferably in marriage) have fewer behavioral disorders, they adapt more easily socially than children who grow up in single-parent families (Lazinski, 2016). It is possible to change the attitude of children and young people towards marriage in a targeted educational process, where the "social learning theory" is of great importance - children learn from their immediate surroundings, form an understanding and attitude towards the necessity of marriage and its embodied values, which have no direct connection with the leading religion or cultures in the country (Kasearu, 2010). In a survey of teachers conducted in 2018, it was found that marriage as a value is emphasized the least in the process of preschool education – it was noted by only 4 % of respondents. In the 2021 monitoring, it was found that only 4% of educational institutions discuss marriage as a value often, but 17 % of educational institutions – never. However, comparing the data of 2020 and 2021, a positive trend can be observed.
