Abstract
The population dynamics and structural transformations involving polyene chromophores in biological sytems are examined using picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy. Vibrational spectroscopy provides a view of the configurational and conformational changes undergone by polyene chromophores as different electronic and vibrationally excited states are populated. In addition the picosecond dynamics reflected in the transient population of these excited states are monitored through the time-dependent resonance Raman band intensities. Results for the excited 2''A electronic state in a variety of carotenoids and for vibrational ly-excited ground-state populations in bacteriorhodopsin are described. 1.
