Abstract

The vibrational cooling process in the first excited singlet (S 1 ) state of trans-stilbene in hexane was observed at room temperature with picosecond pump-probe time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. From the time-dependent change of the peak position of the 1180 cm -1 band, the cooling kinetics of the solute stilbene was clarified. The cooling kinetics was well explained by a simple model in which the vibrational cooling rate of the solute molecule is controlled by the heat conduction in the surrounding solvent. The simulated cooling curves for two different initial heat distributions (8-function and box function) are compared with the observed values.
