Abstract

In 1889 the Technical Institutes' Act was passed which empowered Local Authorities to raise a penny rate for the building and equipping of Technical Schools. Salford Corporation immediately formed a Technical Instruction Committee and the site in Peel Park was chosen for the erection of a building. The building was officially opened on March 25, 1896, by Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York who afterwards became Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary.
