Abstract Photographic surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in B and V wavebands is presented. Problems of background subtraction are discussed, and two independent methods of background determination are used. These are shown to agree sufficiently well to permit surface photometry to a faint limit of around 28th mag/sq arcsec in both wavebands. This photometry suggests that the outer parts of M87 are somewhat brighter than has been suggested by previous photographic investigations (Oemler 1976; Kormendy 1977; King 1978) and by the photoelectric work of deVaucouleurs and Nieto (1978), although the results agree well with the earlier photoelectric photometry of deVaucouleurs (1969). Color gradients in the halo of the galaxy are searched for but not conclusively found. The form of the ellipticity profile is determined, the ellipticity is shown to increase with radius in a manner characteristic of most elliptical galaxies. No variation of position angle of the major axis with isophote radius is found, although some asymmetrical structure at large radii can be seen on a contour map.
