III. E galaxies in the clusters Abell 1228, Abell 2151 (Hercules), and Abell 2199. Strom, K. M. ; Strom, S. E. Abstract U and R surface photometry is reported for 33 and 59 E galaxies located, respectively, in the spiral-rich clusters Abell 1228 and Abell 2151 (Hercules), and for 70 galaxies in the cD cluster Abell 2199. For Abell 1228 and Hercules, the relationship between de Vaucouleurs' radius r e and galaxy luminosity M is found to be identical to that determined previously for the spiral-rich cluster Abell 1367; hence the basic structural properties of E galaxies located in these relatively low-density environments seem to be identical. Ellipticals located in the central, high-density regions of Abell 2199 are characterized by smaller values of r e at a given M than galaxies located either in the outer regions of this cD cluster or in our spiral-rich cluster sample. Similar behavior was reported previously for the E galaxies located in the central regions of the dense, spiral-poor clusters Coma and Perseus. Analysis of isophotal radii for our sample galaxies yields an identical result: The characteristic sizes of E galaxies of a given luminosity are smaller in regions of high galaxy density. It seems plausible that the effects of tidal stripping can account for the observed variation of galaxy sizes with environment. The frequency distribution of galaxy ellipticities appears to be unusual only for Abell 1228: The fraction of high-ellipticity sytems is higher. In this respect Abell 1228 is similar to the Perseus cluster. It may be noteworthy that in both of these clusters the luminous galaxies are distributed along a nearly linear "chain" on the plane of the sky. Except possibly for ellipticals in the Hercules cluster, the derived color-luminosity relation- ships are identical to those found for E galaxies studied previously. Large, extranuclear (r >3 kpc) changes in (U - R) color are found most frequently among luminous ellipticals; lower-luminosity systems exhibit smaller color changes. However, most (>80%) of our sample ellipticals do not exhibit observable halo color gradients.
