Abstract

Surface brightness distributions in the faint outer regions of 19 elliptical and S0 galaxies are presented, and it is argued that these distributions are more reliable than those previously published. Systematic errors in low surface brightness photometry are discussed. The forms of the surface brightness profiles are compared with the isophote shapes of the galaxies, and a number of interesting correlations emerge, although the sample of galaxies is too small to draw any firm conclusions.
