Abstract

Summary The phenomenon of light enhanced dark CO 2 fixation (LED) was used to examine the changes in reactions of CO 2 fixation in maize leaves caused by phosphorus deficiency. The relation between the size of the CO 2 acceptor pool and carboxylation rate was investigated in leaves with nearly 50% decreased phosphorus content but with unchanged photosynthesis rate. The results indicated in vivo the enhancement of PEP carboxylation in maize leaves in the early stages of phosphorus deficiency.
