Abstract

On the 7th of March, 1277 the bishop of Paris, Etienne Tempier, condemned 219 propositions most of which were of a philosophical nature. Shortly afterwards he again attacked 51 theses taken from the writings of the theologian Giles of Rome. In both cases some theses of Thomas Aquinas were also effectively attacked. Does this mean that Aquinas was more than indirectly aimed at ? It is difficult to reply affirmatively since, among other reasons, a third attack this time aimed directly against him seems to hâve been supported by Tempier. This attack had however lead to nothing and finally the Holy See cleared Aquinas of any suspicion of heresy.
