Abstract

This paper presents a methodology to rank the locations for phase-wise placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) based on voltage stability monitoring. The methodology first determines the optimal locations for PMU placement considering N-1contingency for large interconnected power system. Then fast voltage stability index (FVSI) is determined. This index is utilized to determine the voltage critical buses. Based on this index, the bus with highest rank is identified as the weakest or critical load bus since it can withstand a less amount of load before causing voltage collapse. The objective is to monitor these critical load buses in first phase itself. Revised Analytical Hierarchy Process (RAHP) is used for decision making for phasing of PMU location to achieve this objective. Multiple criteria associated with loadability of bus, observability of generators, distribution of PMUs, observability of tie line and buses have been considered in decision making in ranking the PMU buses. The approach has been tested on a standard IEEE 30-bus system and subsequently extended to Northern Regional Power Grid (NRPG) 246-bus real system.
